Letter Challenge Day 28 — Someone Who Changed My Life

Dear Timothy,

Ooo, formality! It appears letter writing makes me speak like a well bred lady of the upper crust! We shall see how long it lasts…

It didn’t take me long to decide on the recipient of this letter. I can think of one glaring way my life has been changed by you and it is that I will write about. But first to the back story!

Quite long ago, when I was but a mere child in mentality as well as looks–though my birth certificate boasted five and ten years to my experience–I was part of a curiously new online experience that combined the care of virtual pets with quests and avatars and guilds and chatboards.

This was Neopets, and as they say in the themed guilds, “Elen síla lumenn’ omentielvo.”*

The Neopets I knew and loved.[Sung to Sexy Thing]
I met Tim on Neopets, yeah!!

Both of us had lost previous accounts, whether by being scammed or hacked I’m not sure (the lines are still pretty blurred in some cases) and it was that loss of accounts that brought us together on some fated Neopian board.

We fast became friends through a guild we both were part of. Our similar responses and simultaneous remarks had us nicknamed “the twins” and boy, do I remember pwning Zach with our asterisk wars! xP

But it didn’t end on the boards! Soon we were messaging through Neopets, and when the word limit prevented us from our deep theological discussions, we broke the sacred rule of the virtual world and exchanged email addresses. It was then you first discovered my name was not in fact Byrd, but Bethany. Yet to you I remain Byrd.

Not long after that, you asked if I would read a story you’d written. I heartily acquiesced, and from then on my fate was sealed.

I decided I should try my hand at writing. You were having such fun creating your story that I figured there was no harm in me giving it a shot.

Six years later, the state of my 65+ (rough estimate) Word documents aren’t sure whether to bless or curse you. :P But in any case, you’ve been a constant encouragement to this writer’s heart from the very beginning. If it wasn’t for you, I probably never would have discovered this great love. I would have muddled through life wondering if I was ever going to find something to be good at. And yet here I am, juggling three stories this very afternoon with the intent on finishing a 30-something chapter novel before the end of the year.

We’ve made each other laugh and weep and rage over stories. We’ve complained about the state of the world, our circumstances, and the difficulty of character development. We’ve rejoiced at a song well sung, a word well written, and confided boy troubles and girl troubles when the occasion required. In all this you’ve been a wonderful friend and I thank God for the silliness of Neopets that led us to find one another.

But most of all, I thank him for your writerly understanding. Your initial enthusiasm that pushed me to start this great adventure. Now wherever my writing takes me, I know in part it’s thanks to you that I became a scribbler of words in the first place.

It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

…and giving, and giving, and giving, and giving… :P

And that, dear lad, is how you’ve changed my life.

*A star shines on the hour of our meeting.

Letter Challenge Day Twenty-Five–Someone you know that is going through the worst of times

Do excuse my lack of actual wordage in this post.

This may not be an entirely accurate response to the letter challenge because the person I’m doing this for… towards? I am no longer speaking with… to? at? So I couldn’t say whether he/she is going through the worst of times or best of times or simply going-on-with-life times.

I’m not even writing a letter to (or at) that person because I thought it best for both parties to end communication completely. No contact. On my end, it’s been quite nice. =) I hope it’s been as pleasant for this other person, but I dare not ask lest another can of worms be unleashed.

I digress.

Jon McLaughlin, a singer/songwriter we both hold in high esteem recently came out with a song that in my mind perfectly sums up our relationship and why I finally ended it. So enough of my paltry words. Allow Jon McLaughlin to say it best by singing…

Project Hair Grow – Month 8

Gah! I missed April! I kept meaning to get a good hair picture for April, but my camera was in the shop for a bit, and then I’ve been working so much that my hair always looks gross by the time I have time to take a picture, and on Sundays I’ve even been twisting it up out of my face because I’m lazy and it’s so much easier that way.

But have a slightly belated hair post!

Oh look! That’s the same shlumpy that appeared in the last hair post!

Apparently I like blue. Many thanks to the Hansonians who donated an unwanted hair straightener to me! :D

There’s another one of me I refused to post because it weirdly doesn’t look like me at all. And I can’t figure out why and it’s freaking me out. :P

Well now that I said something I feel I should post it so you can laugh at my ridiculousness or whatever.

I made it smaller because I don’t like it. It’s like… augh! Who is that woman-girl? I think it’s the creepy half-smile-thing. I must not have been trying hard enough for a certain expression, and this is my “whatever” look, which I do not approve of. Self, never make that face again. BAD SELF!

There I am!! That’s a ME picture! :D I know it’s hard to tell, but I’m the one on the left. ;) The other chipmunk there is Mosie. I love her.

I suddenly got hungry for Frosted Flakes. Hmmm.

The Last Balloon

I can’t believe I did this again. I told myself that Red was a one time one-shot and I wasn’t going to get roped into these writing challenges again. But then Mara posts such lovely pictures that ideas pop into my head and fly out of my fingers almost before I realize I’m trapped.

So I wrote.

This one came easily. I don’t remember the last time something came to me so easily. Okay, it was Red. :P Why are these 1,000 minimum word count one-shots so easy!? Is it the pictures? Is it me? Am I actually learning how to let the words flow? That would be shocking.

Whatever it is, it produced this…

The Last Balloon

The title isn’t fancy, but once again, it stuck.

And here is the picture:

Do not leave me alone

And the contest page:

Be Mine

True Friendship in Quotes

I love reading friendship quotes. I especially love laughing at the sappiness of them and tacking on additions to make them more suited to my own ideals of friendship.

Like this!

“A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”

A best friend already kicked everyone out because she realized they were shallow.

“A friend is one who is there for you when he’d rather be anywhere else.”

A best friend rearranges things so you don’t have to be there either.

“A friend is someone who reaches out for your hand… and touches your heart.”

A best friend doesn’t bother with your hand but goes straight for the heart.

“Love is blind. Friends try not to notice.”

Best friends smack you with eyes wide open until you’re ready to be sensible.

“Good friends are like stars. You don’t always see them, but you know they are there.”

Best friends harass you with every messaging system available so as not to let you forget they’re there.

“A friend is someone who knows all about you and still loves you.”

A best friend is someone who digs up every undesirable thing from your past and then destroys all the evidence.

“Stay is a charming word in a friend’s vocabulary.”

‘If you leave me I will hurt you’ is better.

“A friend is one who will stand up for you no matter the mistakes you’ve made.”

A best friend has earned the privilege to make fun of your mistakes, but will not allow anyone else to do the same.

“A true friend stabs you in the front.”

A best friend pokes you with something fun.

“Friends are flowers in the garden of life.”

Best friends are shade trees, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, and nuts.

“Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light.”

Walking with a friend who has a flashlight and a great sense of direction is ideal.
